WOW is proud to introduce our Mobile Phone recycling scheme. Working
to help recycle4charity raise money for good causes whilst reducing
the damage being done to the environment.
How you can recycle Mobile
phones
Please follow the Recycle4charity link on the right hand side of this
page and order your recycling bags now. If you have an unwanted mobile
phone, no matter what condition or make, simply place it in one of our
recycling bags and put in a letter box. The postage is already paid.
It’s as simple as that.
How we raise money
Mobile phones donated are reconditioned and sold to developing countries
to help their communications infrastructure, or are recycled and disposed
of properly. 50% of the recycling value will be donated to our charity
of choice. The value of each type of phone differs greatly, but all
phones are accepted. As a rough guide to see how much will be donated
phones manufactured after 1998 will be worth around a £5 donation.
Some phones are worth up to £25.
Who receives the money
Currently we donate all monies raised from this scheme to the Disasters
Emergency Committee (DEC) to help provide immediate aid to those
affected by disasters like the Indonesian Earthquake and Tsunami on
December 26th 2004 and the Asian Earthquake in Muzaffarbad, Pakistan,
on 8th October 2005.
Further details
A recent estimate suggests that there are currently more than 75 million
unwanted mobile phones in the world and still the industry isn’t
slowing down. Yet fewer than 5% actually make it to recycling companies.
Apart from the use of fossil fuels to make the numerous casings for
mobile phones, the batteries contain the highly carcinogenic substance
– Cadmium. Left to sit in landfill sites this substance could
do a great deal of harm.
Unfortunately it’s still not common knowledge that all mobiles,
no matter what condition or make have a recycling value. Even a broken,
out of date model can and should be recycled. The good news is that
there are people out there who want to put an end to this waste and
reduce the harm it’s doing to the environment. It’s never
been so easy to be responsible.
